device eth0 does not seem to be present

If you run into this error cloning a VM or changing the NIC on a VM just do the following:

  1. Delete this file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
  2. Reboot
  3. Run system-config-network and re-create

Assuming a RHEL or RHEL-like OS.

log ip addresses with dovecot 0.99

Anyone running RHEL4 will appreciate this.  If you want to see the IP Addresses of users successfully logging in via POP3/IMAP with dovecot 0.99 then you need to set “auth_verbose = yes” in dovecot.conf.  Later versions (1.0+) have some different options available in the configuration file, but they don’t work in 0.99.

Now in maillog (or wherever you log dovecot to) you can see where your users are logging in from the format of:

Nov 20 16:15:56 serverName pop3-login:  Login:  username [::ffff:192.168.1.5]

This is helpful for when an account on your system is hijacked and the attacker is spoofing the from address so when you check your mail queue you can’t tell which user account the mail is coming from.  Now you can grab the relay/source IP address from the header of the outgoing email and grep through maillog to find out which user is logging in from that address.  Once you find out which account is being abused proceed as usual.

rhel hardening tips by the nsa

I’ve been using this handy little “Hardening Tips” guide for awhile now on my RHEL/CentOS 5 systems.  The NSA also has a more comprehensive configuration guide for RHEL5 systems.

logwatch not sending?

Logwatch is great, but occasionally it just will not send the reports for whatever reason.  I’ve gotten into the habit of just setting up a cronjob in root’s crontab to run each morning and send me the report.  You can use this if you have the same trouble:

30 7 * * * /etc/log.d/logwatch —service ALL —range yesterday —mailto username@domain.com

epel - extra packages for rhel

Ever wanted a repository on your RHEL/CentOS box with some extra packages from upstream (Fedora)?  Add EPEL to your repositories for things like, ClamAV, backup software, Nagios, and a whole lot more.
